1. The sum of 6 consecutive odd numbers exceeds twice the largest by 38. Find the sum of the six numbers?

  • A. 57
  • B. 57
  • C. 57
  • D. 57

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Let x represent the smallest number. Then the other number are

x + 2, x + 4, x + 6, x + 8 and x + 10. x + 10 is the largest.

The sum of these is 6x + (2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10) = 6x + 30

We are told that this is 38 greater than twice the largest, so

6x + 30 = 2(x + 10) + 38 = 2x + 58.

or, 4x = 28

∴x = 7

Then the sum is 6×7 + 30 = 72.
