Explanation:

Let the slower pipe alone fill the tank in x min
Then, faster pipe will fill it in x/3 min

So, slower pipe in 1 minute can fill = 1/x part of the tank
and faster pipe in 1 minute can fill = 3/x part of the tank
again, together in 1 minute can fill = 1/36 part of the tank

As per question,
1/x + 3/x = 1/36
∴ x = 144 min (Ans:)
