Let's the two numbers are x and y. wher x>y

x + y = 23....(i)

and x - y = 21......(ii)

or, x - y = 21

or, x = 21 + y....(iIi)

replacing x with x = 21 + y in equation (i)

x + y = 23

or,21 + y + y = 23

or, 21 + 2y = 23

or, 2y = 2

∴ y = 1

so, the smallest number is 1
